The 10th Naxos Summer School for Diachronic Linguistics

  • by

The 10th Naxos Summer School for Diachronic Linguistics on “Comparing Diachronies” was held from July 20-25, 2025, in the historic former Ursuline School building within the Venetian Castle of Naxos Town. The summer school was made possible by the Van Riemsdijk Foundation, which provided financial support to bring together 19 distinguished faculty members from leading institutions across Europe and the United States. The Van Riemsdijk Foundation’s support for fundamental research into our knowledge of language (grammar), including language description, linguistic analysis, and linguistic theorizing, made this international gathering possible. Without this support, the event could not have been realized.

The intensive program featured courses on computational and theoretical approaches to grammar, syntactic analysis, typological studies, and corpus-based methodologies. Daily morning and evening sessions fostered in-depth linguistic analysis and theoretical discussions. Participants presented their own research in the workshop “Linguistic Diachronies: A Contrastive Approach,” with opportunities for publication in “The Naxos Papers” series. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants confirms the summer school’s vital role in advancing fundamental linguistic research and fostering the next generation of researchers dedicated to understanding the nature of language and grammar.
